During my active reading process for this chapter, I used a combination of annotation techniques, including: sticky notes, rhetorical questions, highlighting, etc. I used sticky notes to identify the claims and evidence for the sections of the text which I thought were not as straightforward. For those that were, I simply noted the claim and evidence in the margins of the text. I added my reactions to the text in the form of questions near the relating spots in the text. I mainly questioned parts of the text I found confusing and those that seemed irrelevant. I highlighted parts of the text I found important and commented my reaction to it on the side. One of the challenges of reading this chapter was that it was very dense in terms of academic writing and hard to understand at times due to the constant integration of “fancy” words. Thus, my annotations made it easier for me to understand the topic because I put it in my own words. The sticky notes will make it easier for me to come back to the text later on and identify the main claim and evidence for the specific sections of the text I’m looking at. Overall, the combination of techniques made it easier for me to dissect the text and get to the core of what it was trying to say.
