Throwback to sixth grade Afnan on Facebook sharing what’s on her mind, daily. I promise nobody was THAT interested in your middle school life or what your new score was on Farmville. But hey, it was the excitement and effort that was put into it that counts, right?

I would like to thank my roommate Sydney Ericson for being my Interviewer during this Podcast.

I chose to do my digital assignment on Audacity because I thought that it would capture my narrative more powerfully than a video. I wrote about my senior year English class and so because I did not have any photos that would help provide more insight on the experience, I chose to just speak about the experience in an interview-type podcast.
I would say I spent at least an hour and a half learning about how to use Audacity.
I spent 2 hours drafting the project and over 3 hours editing the project.
I really enjoyed listening to Sherry Turckle’s TED Talk about technology and how it has developed over time, specifically the effect on us humans. I like how she started out with an anecdote to ease into her topic and discussion rather than merely going forth and spitting facts. It was very easy to follow through with and some of the examples she provided were very useful as well. I noticed that she tends to use a lot of hand gestures to emphasize specific things she is stating. In the background for the images, there were mainly quotes for things that she was saying that were meant to stand out to the audience. Some of the examples she gave were also very pertinent to everyday life and thus made it easier to connect with. She also used words such as “we” and “our” to draw in the audience and enforce them to become a part of the issue.
For this Digital Project, I will be using Audacity to create a Podcast. I think that my topic is something that would suit a podcast more opposed to a video. I plan on doing an interview style podcast with background music/sound effects to capture the essence of my narrative.
I definitely understood the concept of what this webinar was targeting however it seemed to come off in a very negative tone towards the new generation of iGens. Some of the examples provided had a negative connotation attached to them: for example, mentioning how adolescents are no longer independent or how it has become more difficult for them to make decisions on their own. Although this may be true for some, it is not necessarily the case for all families. There are those who learn to become independent at an early age or those whose parents expose to the “outside world”. Although, some of the statistics I found very alarming. It is incredible how since 2006, the time spent online has been more than doubled, spending an estimated 6-9 hours a day online (social media, games, etc), according to studies mentioned in the webinar.
Another fact that I think is crucial in mentioning is how since 2010, loneliness, unhappiness, anxiety, and depression have all witnessed an increase. This can be due to several factors: perhaps not spending enough face-to-face time with an individual.
The current model or growth of life is seeing families with not as many children but lots of nurture and care provided for their kids, exhibiting a “slow” life strategy while back in the 1950s, it was practically the opposite: families would have lots of children and expect them to learn different components of life on their own, exhibiting a more “fast” life strategy.
Although the majority of the examples provided seemed more negative, it is important to consider the positive aspects of utilizing social media in all environments, for example PSA videos.
Using a bunch of unnecessary words is a habit that I think I will always have when it comes to my writing. Simply put, I just use a bunch of extra “fluff” that my writing does not need. Instead of using one word to describe something, I opt to use five. I haven’t necessarily been told that this is an issue in my writing but it becomes frustrating for me because I end up writing more than I need to for an assignment. I bet I’ve already used a bunch of filler words for this post.
Although, I did say that one thing I hope to take away from this class is learning how to write more concisely so that is something that I am really looking forward to.
